VIDALIA, La. – It was the Dariel Mays Show at Vidalia High as the senior running back rushed for 330 yards on 17 carries and scored six touchdowns as the Vikings ran past Ouachita Christian 62-37 here Friday.
Vidalia improved to 3-1 overall.
Ouachita Christian, which won state two years ago, fell to 0-4.
Mays got the scoring going early with a 10-yard touchdown run.
The first of many conversions failed.
Viking quarterback Jarrett Hoffpauir tossed a strike to Justin Seals for 18 yards and a touchdown with time running out in the first period. The conversion again failed, leaving the Vikings with a 12-0 advantage.
Hoffpauir finished with 16 completions out of 19 passes for 220 yards.
The Vikings finished with more than 600 yards in offense.
&uot;They had a big ball club,&uot; said Vidalia coach Dee Faircloth. &uot;But speed kills. Dariel took off, and the guys knocked holes for him.&uot;
Ouachita Christian would battle back to get a field goal before the half would end, leaving the score at 20-3 in favor of the home team at halftime.
The visitors from Monroe, La., fought back in the second half, but Mays right, Mays left, and Mays up the middle was too much for the Eagle.
&uot;My offensive line gave me some large holes to run through,&uot; Mays said.
With five minutes left to play in the third, Hoffpauir hit Chris Kennedy for a touchdown to boost the score up to 34-3 Vikings.
&uot;This may be the most explosive team I’ve ever had, even going back to the (Keith) Woodside years,&uot; Faircloth said. &uot;We mixed the run with the pass. I thought our offensive line did a good job.&uot;
Vidalia hosts homecoming next Friday against Jonesboro-Hodge.
&uot;We have to keep our momentum going, especially with district coming up.&uot;
