LORMAN -The Alcorn State Braves did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard against the Panthers of Prairie View, scoring fast and furiously in a 61-0 win over Prairie View here Saturday.

&uot;I think we can stay consistent on both sides of the ball the remainder of the year,&uot; said Alcorn coach Johnny Thomas. &uot;When you have success it gives you a sense of confidence to come out and compete on that level weekly.&uot;

On the Braves’ first possession, Ronald Gilmore caught an 18-yard pass from Marcus Taylor. Erik Newman added the first of eight extra point kicks.

Gilmore had four catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

&uot;I would like to give praise to God and my teammates for having faith in me,&uot; he said.

Ken Washington of Natchez set up the second score, recovering a fumble by the Panthers and taking it it 35 yards for the score. Newman’s kick pu the Braves up 14-0.

On the Braves second pocession Damion Ford tossed a 24-yard scoring strike to Yancy Wright.

In the second period, it was Ford again connecting with Marco Walder for a 22-yard TD. The Braves would use only six plays to go 48 yards for the score.

Deep in their own territory the Panthers would cough up the ball as Howard Clark returned a fumble for 16 yards and a score to push the lead to 27-0. Newman added the PAT.

Surhaver Fair would get in on the act as Ford threw his third TD strike 17 yards for the score to give the Braves a 41-0 halftime lead.

The Braves defense kept the Panthers at bay with a swarming defense that kept the visitors in punt situations.

Clifford Perry would take a punt just before the half at his 28-yard line and returned it 72 yards for the score to increase the Braves lead to 54-0.

On the first play from scrimmage in the third period, Marcus Taylor and Marco Walder would end the scoring with a 8-yard TD toss

Alcorn (3-2) visits Texas Southern next Saturday.
