Sounds of laughter and encouragement drowned out the noise of balls tumbling down the lanes and pins being knocked over during the Special Olympics bowling competition Friday morning.

About 70 athletes were on hand to try their luck on the lanes. Although the techniques varied, the results were the same. Pins were knocked down and encouragement was given to the athletes.

&uot;We always have the bowling competition at the Rivergate Bowl because of the tremendous support they have given to Special Olympics,&uot; said Matilda Stephens, area director of Special Olympics.

Each athlete bowled two games and scores were tallied. Ribbons were given to the high scorers as well as the second place finishers.

The bowling competition is just one of five events Special Olympics provides every year.

As each athlete proudly displayed their ribbons, Jamal Banks looked forward to another day of bowling. &uot;I really liked coming here today,&uot; he said. &uot;I&160;hope we can do it again.&uot;
