Sales tax revenue up in Natchez

NATCHEZ — Sales tax revenues are up in Natchez for the fourth consecutive month.
The city collected $425,928 in May, up from $422,781 in May 2009. Sales tax collections are reported two months after the fact.
City Clerk Donnie Holloway attributes the .74 percent increase to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ 2010 spring meeting.
“We had a lot of activity in May with AASHTO coming in,” Holloway. “Hopefully the (increased sales tax revenues) will continue, but it’s hard to predict.
Sales tax revenues have been on the rise since February, when the city collected $418,097, up from $403,484 in February 2009.
The city collected $447,563 in March, up from $445,321 in March 2009 increase.
The city collected $429,489 in April, up from $424,938 in April 2009.
January revenues might have been an indicator for the months to come. Though January revenues dropped compared to the previous year, the drop was the smallest in months.
The city collected $387,016 in January, down from $390,258 in January 2009. The city experienced as much as a 12 percent decrease in monthly sales tax revenues last year.
Holloway said total sales tax revenue for fiscal year 2010, which began Oct. 1, is $4,223,843.
