The Davidson Lady Warriors dismantled the Newellton Lady Bears 75-54 Thursday night at the First Annual Ronald &uot;Ronnie&uot; Brown Tournament in&160;Vidalia Wednesday.
The Lady Warriors opened the game with a suffocating full-court press that led to numerous Newellton turnovers.
The turnovers allowed Davidson to jump out to an early lead. Lizzie Percy and Myesha Vinson repeatedly found room in the paint and the baseline to drive to the basket.
Once Newellton moved to stop the two guards, Anglia Lee was able to take up the scoring for Davidson.
The Lady Bears climbed back in to the game during the second quarter.
Newellton’s Kindra Jackson began to beat the press and find Katrina Brown under the basket.
Brown’s soft jumpers slowly brought Newellton within two points of the Lady Warriors.
Newellton would have had the lead at halftime but missed 11 free throws during the second quarter.
&uot;We had three players who had three fouls at the half,&uot; Davidson coach, Steve McClatchy said. &uot;That forced us to change our approach to the game at halftime.&uot;
Davidson opened the second half in a half-court zone defense. The zone shut down the Lady Bear’s inside game and allowed Davidson to hit some quick baskets.
The Lady Warrior’s Kana Clark scored the first six points of the third quarter.
Her point production in the third quarter would equal that of the whole Newellton team.
Newellton could only muster six points as Davidson raced to a comfortable lead.
All shots began to fall for Davidson as the Newellton shot bounced off the rim and backboard.
Cymone Marshall of Davidson hit back-to-back threes to push the Lady Warriors lead to 20 points.
Newellton could not get any closer as Coach McClatchy was able to empty his bench before the sound of the final horn.
&uot;Newellton is one of the teams we feel we have to beat,&uot; McClatchy said. &uot;They are a good measuring stick to see how good we are. The half-court zone really worked tonight. It led to some easy baskets on the other end.&uot;
Anglia Lee had 11 rebounds during for the game.
Many of her rebounds were the start of the Davidson fast-break points. Lee also hit numerous free throws during the second half to pad the Lady Warriors lead.
Davidson will play again Friday. They will meet the winner of the Vidalia – Sicily Island game. That game will be played today.
