Mississippi State defensive back Robert Bean’s pass deflection, which resulted in a 27-yard Eugene Clinton interception return last week against Mississippi, was named College Football Play of the Week. It was announced by Compaq Friday.

The interception, which set up Scott Westerfield’s game-winning 44-yard field goal, capped a 14-point, fourth-quarter comeback for MSU. That turnaround matched the largest fourth-quarter comeback in recorded school history. The Bulldogs also erased a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit against Memphis State in 1985.

With the Bulldogs and Rebels knotted at 20 only 20 seconds remaining in regulation, Bean slapped a Romaro Miller pass away from Maurice Flournoy. However, as Bean fell to the ground, the ball deflected off his foot and into the hands of an opportunistic Clinton, who then raced down the sideline before being pushed out of bounds at the Mississippi 27.

The Compaq College Play of the Week program is sponsored by Compaq Computer Corporation. It is the only program that categorizes and judges plays nominated by colleges and universities from all levels of college football. The winning school receives computer equipment from Compaq. The top play in each of several categories is transmitted each week via satellite to all television stations in the nation.
