FERRIDAY — Devin Voorhies and Wilkinson County High School continued to rack up the wins as the Wildcats took care of business at Ferriday High School, 29-6.

Voorhies tallied 65 yards rushing and two touchdowns and was 13-for-16 in passing for 101 yards and a touchdown to help spoil the Trojans’ homecoming.

Despite the win, Wildcats head coach Kenneth Brown said several uncharacteristic fumbles made things a little more difficult than he would have liked, as Wilkinson County only led 14-6 at the half.

“We put it on the ground a few times, but we managed to stay positive about it and fought through it enough to pull off the win,” Brown said.

“But those are things we’ll have to work on, because we can’t do that against better football teams.”

Voorhies got things started for the Wildcats on a 10-yard touchdown run with 9:04 left in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Ferriday scored its lone touchdown on a 10-yard carry by running back Jarvis Brooks with 5:20 left before the half.

Nicholas Hull helped extend Wilkinson County’s lead by scoring on a 39-yard carry with 3:50 left before intermission.

In the third quarter, Voorhies connected with Allenzae Staggers on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 8:24 left. Voorhies tallied his final touchdown of the night on a 4-yard carry with 6:23 left in the fourth.

Wilkinson County’s Rashawn Montgomery had a tackle in the end zone for a safety to make it 29-6.

Brown was complimentary of the Trojans, and said he told his players they couldn’t overlook Ferriday during practice this week.

“Ferriday has a good team,” Brown said. “They’re small, but they’re scrappy. It was homecoming time, so we knew they’d come ready to play.”

Brown said it was a sign of maturity from his players that they didn’t get down on themselves despite a few turnovers.

He also said it was helpful that his team won a game that was close for two quarters.

“Hopefully this gives us momentum, knowing we can play close games and still put enough together to win in the end,” Brown said. “All of them aren’t going to be easy, especially with district play coming up.”

Ferriday (1-3) plays at Jennings High School next week. Wilkinson County (5-0) will travel to Franklin County.
