Trinity gets sweep over Huntington

FERRIDAY, La. — Miss-Lou basketball fans got a taste of the future as Trinity and Huntington continued their bitter rivalry.
Unfortunately, the hosts don’t want to set a millennial trend as Sarah Kirby poured in a game-high 14 points and Lauren Tanner grabbed 15 rebounds as the Trinity ladies cruised to a 61-39 win.
John Bass paced the Trinity boys with his 20 first-half points to lead the visitors to a convincing 72-38 victory.
In the opener, an optimistic Emily Hazlip stressed Huntington’s need for patience. &uot;We have to be patience and work for good shots. It is fun to see us improving, but we will have our hands full.&uot;
The improving Lady Hounds tangled with an inconsistent Trinity team looking for a breakout game to start district play.
Early on, Trinity was saddled with early foul trouble as the Lady Hounds managed to keep the game close. Sara Greer’s scoring was responsible for a 14-7 first quarter lead. More importantly, it was Greer’s smothering defense that shut down the high scoring Hazlip who finished with only six points.
As the Lady Saints defense stiffened it was the inspired board play of Lauren Tanner, who finshed with 12 points, that created a number of lethal second chance opportunities. Kirby tossed in 10 in the first half pacing the visitors to a commanding 34-17 halftime bulge.
Ashley Kingsafer and Greer would help put the Lady Hounds away with a 21-4 third quarter run, as both teams substituted liberally from then on.
Greer and Kingsafer chipped in 10 points each.
The Lady Hounds, who never quit, were lead by the steady effort of Tessa Taunton’s 11 points.
After the game an elated Greer stressed the importance of fun and teamwork for the win. &uot;We had a lot of fun tonight and really supported each other. We came with a lot of energy and were ready to play thanks to coach (Melanie) Hall. Tonight was our best game, and we needed it for district play.&uot;
For the boys, if anyone told Huntington coach Greg Weatherly that Trinity scorers Bobby Craig and Kris Thomson combined would only score six first-half points he may not have believed it. However, it was Trinity’s John Bass who saved the day early and often with his first half heroics.
Both teams opened the game cold as the Hounds wasted many chances to extend an early first-half lead. But a critical 6-0 run with 30 seconds in the first half buried the Hounds, as a five point deficit quickly turned the momentum and the margin to 11 points.
The lethargic hosts would then watch as Trinity’s bench slowly put the game away lead by Chad Ridley’s 13 points. A 14-4 third quarter run took away any chances for a Huntington upset as they continue to look for their first win falling to 0-10.
Kris Thomson finished with 13 and Bass with a game-high 24 tallies for the winners. John Johns and Chris Zuccarro paced the Hounds with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Both teams are back in action Monday as Trinity hosts Silliman, while Huntington plays at WCCA.
