The Cathedral High School girls and boys basketball teams got the new millennium of sports activity at Cathedral High underway Tuesday night. However, it wasn’t quite as memorable as they hoped it would’ve been. The varsity girls squad went down in defeat to Loyd Star High School by the score of 66-36. As for the varsity boys, the Green Wave went down hard to an &uot;up-tempo&uot; Hornet squad to the tune of 79-38.

In the girls game, the Lady Wave kept the game close throughout the first quarter, as the score heading into the second quarter was 16-12, and by halftime the Loyd Star lead was 10 with the score being 29-19.

&uot;Their defense really got to us right about the middle of the third quarter,&uot; Lady Wave head coach Craig Beesley said.

&uot;They went on a something like a 33-13 run at one point, and that was pretty much it for us right there.&uot;

Both teams committed 27 turnovers, however, Loyd Star turned most of their takeaways into points, whereas Cathedral was not able to capitalize as well on the Lady Hornet miscues.

Loyd Star’s 23 point output in the third quarter to Cathedral’s four was what did the Lady Wave in, as the score heading into the final quarter of play was 52-23.

&uot;We just ran up against a really good team tonight,&uot; Beesley said.

The Lady Hornets also shot 57% from the free throw stripe on the night to Cathedral’s 50%.

Dana Coke paced the Lady Hornets with 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Christie May knocked down 10 points and pulled down 10 boards for Loyd Star.

Betsi McGraw led the Lady Wave with 11 points and Kate Prescott came up with five.

In the boys game, which featured the Green Wave sporting a stripe over the left shoulder of their uniforms in honor of the late Bill Cameron, who was in his first year as Wave basketball head coach, Loyd Star got off to a 26-10 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Cathedral was outscored 21-17 in the second quarter, but the Hornets used a 23-10 advantage in the third quarter to virtually put the game away.

&uot;They really stepped up their tempo on defense, and that’s really not our game,&uot; said interim head coach Terry Moffett.

&uot;They ran the floor real well, and we just couldn’t keep up with them. From what I&160;saw tonight, if they play for the rest of the year the way they played against us tonight, they should be in every game they play from here on out.&uot;

Loyd Star put the game out of reach when it put points on the board on 14 of its first 17 shots in the second half.

For the game, Loyd Star shot 58% from the field to the Green Wave’s 32%.

Justin Ratcliffe led the Hornets with 19 points, and was followed by Marcus Shannon who put up 18 points for the winning team.

Lanoxne Scott led the Green Wave with 16 points and also had a game-high eight rebounds. Christopher Martin followed with 14 points.
