Block, Ferriday fall in LHSAA playoffs

JONESVILLE — Anytime a team amasses 317 yards of total offense and only punts the ball twice, you have to figure that team has a pretty good chance of winning.

Unfortunately for Block High school, moving the ball around did little good when the offense kept killing any momentum it had by continuing to fumble the ball.

The Bears fumbled four times in key situations as they fell to West St. John High School 21-13 in the Regional Round of the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.

“We drove up and down the field,” Vault said. “Turnovers were the difference in the game. We fumbled the ball at the most inopportune times.”

Block opened things up in the first quarter, scoring first on a 22-yard touchdown reception by Vashawn Davis.

West St. John responded with a 41-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Daylon Feist to running back Kenneth Dabney.

Block scored again in the second quarter on a 2-yard touchdown carry by Preston Bowman. The touchdown gave Block a 13-7 lead going into the half.

The Bears would not score again in the second half, however, as West St. John added two more touchdowns to give it the victory.

In the third quarter, Dabney scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. He added a 44-yard touchdown carry in the fourth quarter.

The loss ends the Bears’ 2009 season, in which they finished 6-6.

Regional Round

Farmerville 21, Ferriday 0

FARMERVILLE, La. — The Ferriday Trojans were looking to avenge a 44-24 loss at home to Farmerville two weeks ago that gave the Farmers the District 2-2A championship.

Well, the final score between the two teams wasn’t as high-scoring as the previous battle between those teams, but Farmerville once again got the best of Ferriday as the Farmers prevailed 21-0 over the Trojans Friday night to advance to the Class 2A quarterfinals.

“Our kids played hard. It was a knock down drag out. Things didn’t go our way in the first half,” Ferriday head coach Freddie Harrison said. “They’re a real physical team. I wish them well in the playoffs.”

No. 5 seed Farmerville (11-1) took a 12-0 lead at halftime.

The Farmers then scored a touchdown in the third quarter for an 18-0 lead and added a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Ferriday, which entered the Class 2A playoffs as the No. 12 seed, finished with an 8-4 record.
