It was a long night for Cathedral’s varsity girls and boys basketball teams against District 6-2A rival Hinds AHS Tuesday night.

The Wave boys fell 84-48.

In the girls contest, center Amber Watts had a triple-double for the Lady Bulldogs in a convincing 65-48 victory over the Lady Green Wave.

Watts had 19 points, 15 rebounds and 13 blocked shots. Virethia Kelly led Hinds with 21 points and made three three-pointers. Brenna Shoto had 16 points and made two threes.

&uot;Their center (Watts, who is 6’4&uot;) dominated in the paint,&uot; said Lady Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley. &uot;She was tough. We couldn’t contain her.&uot;

Another problem for the Lady Green Wave was the defense of the Lady Bulldogs, which forced over 20 turnovers for the game.

Hinds scored the first ten points of the game before Kate Prescott’s basket with 1:52 left in the first quarter for Cathedral. Hinds led 11-5 after one quarter.

It would not get any better for the Lady Green Wave in the second quarter as the Lady Bulldogs outscored them 18-13 to give the visitors a 29-18 halftime lead.

Cathedral would then go down by 16 points at 40-24 before going on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to six in the third quarter.

The run was led by Kate Prescott, who led Cathedral with 14 points, and Betsi McGraw, who had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Hinds had a 48-35 lead to start the fourth quarter, but Cathedral went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to six again. But that’s as close as they would get.

&uot;We ran out of gas midway through the fourth quarter,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We cut the lead to six (50-44), but we couldn’t get any closer. They went man-to-man full court all game. That’s what wore us down.&uot;

Cathedral dropped to 7-7 overall and 1-5 in district. Hinds AHS improved to 13-9 overall and 5-0 in district.

In the boys game, the Bulldogs outscored the Green Wave 28-10 in the second quarter and cruised to an 84-48 victory.

Samuel Richardson had 18 points, 16 in the first half, nine rebounds and five steals. Lawrence Neal and Kendrick Burton each had 10 points.

&uot;We ran into the best team in our district,&uot; said Green Wave head coach Terry Moffett. &uot;They’re a good basketball team.&uot;

Cathedral kept the game close in the first quarter and only trailed 24-16 at the end of the quarter.

Then the Bulldogs turned up the defense in the second quarter, which led to many Green Wave turnovers. It seemed like the second quarter would never end for Cathedral.

The second half was almost the same as the first half, except that Hinds was held to only 16 points in the third and fourth quarters.

Lanoxne Scott and Zac Robinson each had 10 points and Chris Martin had eight points for Cathedral.

Cathedral will host St. Aloysius Friday night beginning with a junior varsity game at 5 p.m.
