The Cathedral Lady Green Wave overcame terrible free throw shooting and a furious Thomastown rally to defeat the Lady Panthers 38-34 Friday night.

The Lady Green Wave looked like they were going to put the game away early, going on top 12-2 after one quarter of play.

After going 4-for-6 at the free throw in the first quarter, Cathedral (9-8) went 1-for-9 in the second quarter, which allowed Thomastown to get back in the game.

Cathedral converted on only eight of 23 free throws for the game.

The Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Green Wave 11-7 in the second quarter to cut Cathedral’s lead to six at halftime, 19-13.

&uot;We got a little bit out of our offensive set in the first half,&uot; said Lady Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley. &uot;We played more of their style than our style of basketball.&uot;

The Lady Panthers played an up-tempo game which had Cathedral out of sync throughout the game.

&uot;We didn’t do a good style of making ourselves slow the ball down,&uot; Beesley said.

Cathedral went on an 8-0 run to start the third quarter to increase its lead to 14 and once again the Lady Green Wave appeared to take control of the game.

But the Lady Panthers came back behind the rebounding and defense of Sheena Dixon and Tureka Watson, who helped cut Cathedral’s lead to 33-24 after three quarters.

Dixon finished with 14 points and 20 rebounds and Watson had 11 points, 11 rebounds, six blocks and six steals.

Thomastown continued to put the pressure on Cathedral in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to just three with 25 seconds left before Vee Brice converted on one of two free throws to seal the game.

&uot;I am pleased to win this game,&uot; Beesley said.

Kate Prescott led Cathedral with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Betsi McGraw had 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

In the boys contest, a late-game rally by Cathedral came up just short as the Panthers held on for a 67-65 win over the Green Wave.

The first quarter had its share of missed shots by both teams as the Panthers had a 7-6 lead at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter was anything but lackluster as both teams finally got their offenses going.

The Green Wave outscored the Panthers 24-20 in the quarter despite the three-point shooting of Terry Cooper and Derrick White.

Cathedral took a 28-27 halftime lead despite Thomastown hitting five threes in the first half.

The Panthers then went on a 10-0 run to start the third quarter to take a 37-28 lead and took a 47-41 lead going into the fourth quarter.

It appeared that the game was over when Thomastown took a 61-51 lead with about two minutes remaining.

However, the Green Wave came back with a 14-6 run to cut the lead to two at 67-65 with about 20 seconds left.

With two seconds left, Lanoxne Scott’s three-point shot bounced off the rim and Chris Armstrong grabbed the rebound for the Panthers as time expired.

Cooper led the Panthers with a game-high 27 points, Derrick White had 17 and Danielle Whitney had 15.

Scott led Cathedral with 26 points and Bart Lane had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
