Lady Hounds fall to Briarfield

Briarfield Academy outscored Huntington 10-5 in overtime to defeat the surprising Lady Hounds 63-58 in the consolation game of the MPSA District 6A&160;Basketball&160;Tournament Saturday at Trinity’s Clyde Adams Gymnasium.
Huntington upset River Oaks and Presbyterian Christian before losing to Trinity Friday.
The contest stayed close throughout.
Sarah Ashmore, who was named to the All-Tournament team, hit a 3-point basket to put the Lady Hounds up 15-12 at the sart of the second quarter.
All-Tourney Emily Hazlip put Huntington up 17-12 before the Lady Rebels tied the game at 24-24.
Hazlip gave Huntington a 31-30 lead with 3:52 remaining in the third quarter.
Briarfield led 39-35 after three quarters.
Huntington cut the lead early in the final quarter before Hazlip hit a 3-pointer with 5:28 remaining to tie the game at 45-45.
Huntington’s put the Lady Hounds up 49-47 with 3:13 left.
Briarfield’s Jackie Brown tied the game with a basket and Jessica Tomlinson put the Lady Rebels ahead 51-49 with 2:20 left.
Hazlip hit a free throw and Tiffany Ferguson added two free throws to give the Lady Hounds a 52-51 advantage.
Briarfield’s Sarah Beth Fairchild put the Lady Rebels up 53-52.
Briarfield turned the ball over and Huntington’s Tessa Taunton hit a free throw to tie the game with nine seconds left.
Briarfield missed on a shot to win to send the game in overtime.
Taunton put Huntington up 55-53 with a basket in overtime, but Briarfield’s Parker hit a 3-pointer to put Briarfield up by a point.
Two free throws by Parker and a basket by Fairchild put the Lady Rebels up 61-56.
Hazlip answered with a basket, but Brown hit two free throws with 12 seconds left to lift the Lady Rebels to the win.
Hazlip led Huntington with 26 points, while Ferguson added 10.
Tomlinson and Brown led Briarfield with 20 and 19 points, respectively.
Huntington is now 10-21 and will face a top seed at South State in the first round next week.
Lady Hound coach Penny Moak was disappointed with the loss, but was proud of how her team, with no seniors and one junior, performed in the tournament.
&uot;It’s always easy to look down the road, but this is a valuable experience for us,&uot; Moak said. &uot;And I’m a firm believer in anything can happen.&uot;
In the boys consolation contest, River Oaks defeated Franklin 52-42 as David Simmons scored 19 points.
Both teams advance to the South State Tournament.
