Sandon Kemp blasted a 2-run home run over the outfield lights in the bottom of the fifth to lead Monterey to a 4-3 win over Cathedral at Monterey, La., Saturday.
Monterey improved to 3-0 with the win.
&uot;This team is most spirited group I’ve even seen,&uot; said Monterey coach Hank Zizzi. &uot;They keep me late at practice. It’s a fun group and they are real close-knit.&uot;
Monterey scored one run in the first inning and another in the third.
Cathedral scored one run in the second and its only other run in the fifth.
A.J. Smith also homered for the Wolves and also had two singles.
Kemp singled along with his home run, while Paul Copeland added another single.
Cathedral’s two runs came as a result of solo home runs by Steven Bush and Key Smith. Patrick Beasley doubled.
Phillip Bryan was the winning pitcher, going two innings, striking out four.
Beau Barfoot pitched four innings and had six strikeouts.
Chris Norris was tagged with the loss.
&uot;We played an excellent defensive game,&uot; Zizzi said. &uot;Were were aggresive on the base paths. We finally have some speed.&uot;
Cathedral fell to 2-2 on the season.
&uot;Monterey outplayed us,&uot; said Cathedral coach Ken Beesley. &uot;Their pitchers did a good job. Steven Bush and Josh Torrey are the only ones hitting for us right now. We’ve struggled at the plate all year. The last two games we’ve only gotten six hit. The thing that is most disturbing about that is that we are striking out too much. We’ve got to cut down on those.&uot;
The junior varsity contest ended in a 5-5 tie.
Cathedral had seven hits, while Monterey totaled five. Clay Hammons had a double for the Green Wave.
Cathedral plays at Vidalia Monday, while Monterey visits Harrisonburg on Monday.
