Alcorn St. captures SWAC title

LORMAN — The Alcorn State Braves were picked to repeat as the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s champions by the league’s coaches prior to the start of the season.

Monday night they did just that.

The Braves defeated the Texas Southern Tigers 82-65 at the Davey L. Whitney Complex to close out the regular season with a 26-game home court win streak.

The Braves ended the regular season with a 18-9 overall record along with a 15-3 mark for first place in SWAC play while the Tigers dropped to 13-13 overall and a 9-8 league mark.

A contributing factor in Alcorn State’s victory was making 50.8 percent from the floor while holding Texas Southern to 38.6 percent shooting. In spite of this, the Tigers shot 44 percent from three-point range by connecting on 11 of 25 attempts from beyond the arc while the Braves only shot 28.6 percent on four of 14 attempts.

In addition, both teams shot very well from the free throw line with Alcorn State shooting 72.7 percent (16-22) to Texas Southern’s 71-4 percent (1 0- 14).

Alcorn State had five players to score in double figures with guard Corey Mangum leading the way with 17 points, three rebounds and two steals. Forward Terrance Cameron had 14 points by connecting on 6 of 10 field goals along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Both forward Marcus Fleming and guard Wallace Harris had 12 points each while Harris had six rebounds.

Treymane Chambers added ten points.

Texas Southern’s guard Patrick Dyess led all scorers with 26 points while connecting an six of ten three-point attempts along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Guard Ricky Bennett added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.
