Ferriday learning patience

Ferriday High head boys basketball coach James M. Davis is teaching his team about patience this week. The Trojans host Newman in a Class 2A&160;second round playoff game after upsetting Opelousas Catholic.

The contest will be played at Vidalia High School’s gym because Ferriday’s gym is not large enough.

Newman defeated Catholic-New Iberia 52-33 in the first round.

&uot;They are very patient on offense,&uot; Davis said. &uot;They run a lot of back picks and screens. They are not tall, they just try and wear you out. They’ll pass the ball 12 or 15 times before taking a shot. Hopefully we can get up by 10 or 15 points and make them come out of that offense.&uot;

Newman, 21-9, tied West St. John for the District 9-2A championship, both with 11-1 records.

West St. John defeated Newman in a playoff seeding game.&160;The Greenies were led by Jeremy Lumar with 16.

Ferriday entered the playoffs as a wild card team out of District 3-2A.

&uot;We just played real good defense,&uot; Davis said of the Trojans’ 65-63 win. &uot;We played good man-to-man throughout the whole ballgame. We got some great help from our guards when they were trying to get the ball inside.&uot;
