After losing to St. Aloysius last week, Cathedral’s tennis team defeated Block High 7-2 Thursday at the Duncan Park tennis courts to pick up its first win of the year.
This was the first match for the Jonesville, La., school’s tennis program.
&uot;It’s always good to have a win under the belt,&uot; said Cathedral tennis coach Lynn Ogden. &uot;Block’s a new team for us. It’s good competition for us and I enjoyed it.&uot;
Cathedral’s Ian Doherty and Ben Tillman each picked up shutout wins in boys singles action.
Tillman defeated Jones 8-0 while Doherty defeated Breithaupt 6-0, 6-0 despite having a pulled shoulder.
&uot;It doesn’t really hurt when I serve, mainly afterwards,&uot; Doherty said. &uot;I didn’t think it would be as easy as it was, but I also didn’t think it would be too difficult.&uot;
In girls singles action, Gina Smith lost to McMillin 2-8 and Mary Alice Cooley had to come from behind to defeat Brittain Brown 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
&uot;It was bad. The first match I was nervous,&uot; Cooley said. &uot;After I got my head in the game in the second set I started to play well.&uot;
Bryson Ogden and Andrew Stubbs won their boys doubles match over Trisler and Neal 6-0, 6-1.
&uot;The key was consistency in our serve,&uot; Stubbs said. &uot;Our serves were on. We made sure we got the ball in.&uot;
&uot;The whole team picked up its intensity after losing to St. Al,&uot; Ogden said. &uot;We came to win.&uot;
In the girls doubles matches, Lauren Biglane and Erin Wentworth defeated Bondurant and Bruit 6-4, 6-3 while Jennifer Blain and Claire Cothren lost to McMillin and Pritchard 5-8.
In mixed doubles action, Tillman and Holly Sawardecker easily defeated Breithaupt and Pritchard 6-2, 6-1.
Chase Ogden and Kate Reid got by Trisler and Bondurant 8-6.
Despite the win, Ogden said there is still room for improvement.
&uot;There are things I saw today that we need to work on in practice.&uot;
