Milton Green of R.W. Delaney Construction Co. uses a backhoe to bust through a slab of concrete from the old water drainage pipe that runs under Canal Street. Assistant city engineer David Atkins said the city is trying to reclaim the grown up area and eventually may add 300 feet of new pipe onto the existing pipe in order to improve drainage in the area. Erosion caused by Mother Nature is already showing signs along the railroad tracks crossing Canal Street. The tracks have started to shift slightly because of the erosion.
