NATCHEZ — Few Cathedral High School fans could forget last year’s thrilling, come-from-behind win against Stringer High School.

The Green Wave relied on a late touchdown, an onside kick and a Hail Mary pass to come back against Stringer and win 36-33.

Cathedral head coach Ron Rushing said there’s little doubt Stringer will be looking for revenge when the Green Wave take the field at Stringer Friday, but that doesn’t mean Cathedral won’t be playing with emotion, too.

“We want to show people in the state that we’re a good team,” Rushing said. “They can look at it as revenge, but we can look at it like we have something to prove.”

Rushing said Stringer’s system hasn’t changed much from last year — they’re still heavily run-oriented on offense — but the personnel has changed quite a bit.

“They graduated 14 seniors, but it looks like they reloaded,” Rushing said. “They’re not as big as they were last year, but they’re fast and physical up front. They don’t throw extremely well, but you don’t have to when you run that well.”

One returning starter for Stringer is quarterback Tevin Moore, whom Rushing said his defense will have to key up on.

“He’s one of the best athletes in Single-A,” Rushing said. “He’s extremely fast an athletic. He probably had 200 to 300 yards (rushing) on us last year.”

After two bye weeks, Cathedral is coming off a big win against Resurrection Catholic School last Friday. Rushing said he’s glad his players will get back to a normal game routine the rest of the way.

“That was dreadful,” Rushing said of the layoff. “It’s hard enough to keep high school kids focused for seven days. We actually worked those 21 days, and the kids did a good job.”

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Stringer.
