Kossum, Coward lead Natchez past Cathedral

Brian Kossum went 3-for-3 with a home run and Nolan Coward had a good pitching performance as Natchez High defeated Cathedral 10-1 Saturday at Chester Willis Field.
The win was Natchez High’s sixth in its last eight games after an 0-5 start.
Coward pitched a complete game, allowing one run on six hits, striking out four and walking six.
&uot;Nolan pitched a good game. He set the tone for us,&uot; said Natchez High head baseball coach Micheal Lindsey.
Kossum led off the top of the second inning with a single, went to second on a Cathedral error, stole third and scored on a fielder’s choice by Lance Harveston.
Beau Hale walked, stole second, reached third on Harveston’s fielder’s choice and scored on another Green Wave error to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Natchez High added four more runs in the top of the fourth. After Brock Barlow single, pinch runner Floyd Newman went to third on a Cathedral error and scored when he beat a throw to home plate.
Kossum scored on a fielder’s choice by Marquis Kinds. Beau Hale and Lance Harveston scored on a Nolan Coward single.
&uot;We hit the ball well,&uot; coach Lindsey said. &uot;They’ve played with as much intensity as they have all year.&uot;
Cathedral scored in the bottom of the fourth when pinch hitter Clay Hammonds scored on a passed ball.
&uot;Natchez High played well today,&uot; said Cathedral head baseball coach Ken Beesley. &uot;Their pitcher (Coward) pitched good and had some good defense behind him. They outplayed us.&uot;
Natchez High scored two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the sixth, Nolan Coward drove in Leon Stewart with a double and scored on a passed ball.
In the seventh, Barlow doubled and scored on Kossum’s home run to left field.
Cathedral had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Casey Rodgers grounded out to first for the final out.
Christopher Martin took the loss for Cathedral. Martin gave up six runs on three hits, struck out two and walked two in four innings.
Chris Norris gave up four runs on four hits, struck out two and walked two in 2 1/3 innings. Brent Tosspon gave up one hit in 2/3 of an inning.
Natchez High, 6-7, plays at Forest Hill next Tuesday beginning with the junior varsity game at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.
Cathedral, 7-6, plays at Wesson next Tuesday starting with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.
In the junior varsity game, Cathedral defeated Natchez High 12-3. Brent Tosspon was the winning pitcher for Cathedral while Antoine Wilson suffered the loss for Natchez High.
