FERRIDAY, La. – A suspect in the Saturday shooting of a Natchez man was arrested by Ferriday police Sunday night on unrelated charges following a traffic stop.

Fernando Williams, 20, of 613 Georgia Ave. in Ferriday, was booked into the parish jail on charges of expired license plate, expired inspection sticker, no driver’s license and flight from officer. His bond had not been set Monday.

He was also charged with an outstanding bench warrant for failure to appear in court on Jan. 26 on a charge of simple robbery in connection with the robbery of a juvenile. That robbery allegedly took place Oct. 12, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Timothy Tyler, 23, of Natchez, was shot twice in the lower back with a shotgun at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Auto Zone — not nearby Club Steppers, as previously reported. Tyler was released Sunday from LSU Medical Center in Monroe.

Ferriday Police Chief Eddie Newman said Monday that Williams is a prime suspect in the shooting but said the matter is still under investigation.

On Sunday evening, Officer Ricky Hollins spotted Williams driving away from an apartment complex on Kyle Road, stopped the vehicle for traffic violations and called for backup, Newman said.

Williams stopped the vehicle near a nearby lounge, KG’s, and tried to flee on foot but officers Hollins and Eddie Lee Martin and Deputy Sherman Collins subdued him.

Newman said he will ask the District Attorney’s Office to further investigate the case along with the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office, as is usually done with felony cases.
