Cathedral junior Scott McLemore delivered a one-out grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to give the Green Wave a 9-5 win over Vidalia here Friday.
McLemore’s home run came with the score tied at 5-5.
&uot; It’s my first home run in a varsity game, and it’s probably going to be the biggest one of all,&uot;&160;McLemore said.
&uot;We got started out kind of slow tonight, and I&160;got kind of worried there towards the end, but once one guy started hitting, the whole team did,&uot; said Cathedral head coach Ken Beesley.
Vidalia and Cathedral combined to leave five men stranded in the first two innings.
Josh Torrey started things off with a double that scored Stephen Bush, who had singled, and Casey Rodgers who had walked.
Jarrett Hoffpauir got Vidalia on the board in the top of the fifth inning, when he sent a Charlie Norris fastball into deep centerfield for a triple, which scored one run. Hoffpauir would then score on a passed ball, which tied the score at t2-2.
A fielder’s choice allowed another Viking to cross the plate in the fifth.
Hoffpauir smacked a double in the top of the sixth, which scored two more Vidalia runs.
Cathedral sent eight men to the plate in the seventh inning, and seven of them scored.
Jeremi Hardy led off the inning by being hit by a pitch on an 0-2 count. Key Smith singled, Stephen Edwards doubled in Hardy, and Chris Norris singled in Smith.
Bush then tied the score with an RBI-single that scored Edwards.
After an intentional pass to Rodgers to load the bases, McLemore’s heroics came to pass.
&uot;It really didn’t go out by much,&uot;&160;Wave assistant coach Craig Beesley said.
McLemore’s grand slam added one more chapter to a game of inches.
&uot;I&160;knew that once Hardy got on base, and the rest of those guys started hitting, that they were going to end up pulling it out,&uot;&160;Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said.
&uot;We had a few things go our way, and they had a couple of things go their (Cathedral) way. It just so happens that their’s counted the most,&uot;&160;Hoffpauir said.
&uot; We’ve really got to start swinging the bat better than we are right now,&uot;&160;Beesley said.
&uot;We still don’t have anybody that will take on the leadership role, but that will come,&uot; Beesley said.
Chris Norris collected the win in relief of his brother, Charlie, and Barry Bowden suffered the loss.
&uot;Barry did a great job,&uot;&160;Hoffpauir said. &uot;He came in in a pressure situation, and really handled it well. I’m proud of him.&uot;
Cathedral will travel to Vicksburg today for a JV and varsity game with St. Aloyisius.
