Two more candidates put their hats in the ring Friday to run for mayor of Natchez.
State Rep. Phillip &uot;Bucket&uot; West, D-Natchez, qualified as an Independent to run for mayor. And John &uot;Pulley Bones&uot; Pullen, owner of Pulley Bones restaurant, qualified as a Democrat.
Three other candidates have already qualified for the race: incumbent Mayor Larry L. &uot;Butch&uot; Brown and F.L.&160;&uot;Hank&uot; Smith, Democrats, and Robert F. Costa, an Independent.
West, a former Adams County supervisor, is in his third year in the state Legislature. He also ran for mayor four years ago.
West said he wants to help create more jobs in Natchez if elected.
&uot;People have been asking me to run,&uot; he said. &uot;So many people feel that the present direction of the city does not lend itself to opportunity for everyone.&uot;
Pullen said he believes &uot;it is time for Natchez to change our concept of where we are going.&uot;
&uot;I believe it is time for some average businessman with industrial sales background, and who knows what hard work earns, (to have) a chance to help Natchez grow,&uot; Pullen said.
Smith owns Hullabaloo Gifts in the Canal Street Depot, the same shopping center as Pullen’s restaurant.
Costa owns TASS&160;House Antiques and TASS&160;House Bed & Breakfast.
Also qualifying Friday was Democrat Bettye Bell, who will run against incumbent Alderman Theodore &uot;Bubber&uot; West for the Ward 4 seat. When contacted Friday, Bell said she was unable to talk about her campaign but would have a statement about the race next week.
