VIDALIA — Four charges were filed Wednesday — including driving while intoxicated — against the Rev. Justin Conner in reference to a July auto accident.

District Attorney Brad Burget said his office filed the four bills of information on Wednesday charging Conner with DWI, careless operation, speeding and no seat belt.

“We’re confident in our case and look forward to our day in court,” Burget said.

Conner’s case was randomly allotted to Division B, which is assigned to Seventh Judicial Court Judge Leo Boothe.

Since all four charges are misdemeanors, Burget said once Boothe reviews the bills of information he can issue a summons for Conner to appear in court or issue an arrest warrant.

On July 22, Conner, 40, was traveling west on Alabama Street at approximately 1:48 a.m., when he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. His vehicle left the roadway and struck a foundation to a house under construction.

Conner received moderate injuries, and there was extensive damage to his vehicle and the foundation of the house.

An ambulance was dispatched to the scene, but Conner refused medical treatment.

Conner received a citation for careless operation and no seat belt. A breathalyzer or field sobriety test was not administered.

Vidalia Police Chief Arthur Lewis launched an investigation into the matter to determine if his officers followed proper policy and procedure and put two officers on non-paid administrative leave.

Those two officers were among the 14 City of Vidalia employees that were laid off in August because of budgetary concerns.

Burget said the investigation is ongoing and further charges are possible.
