Cathedral High scored six runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 10-7 win over St. Andrews Tuesday, setting up a playoff showdown with Loyd Star Friday.
Cathedral and Loyd Star both have two losses in district, and Friday’s district finale will decide the second place team in the district and who advances to the playoffs.
St. Andrews swept Loyd Star during the regular season, with its only loss coming to Wesson. The Saints beat Cathedral in Jackson in their first meeting.
Cathedral lost to Loyd Star in Natchez in their first meeting of the season.
&uot;It’s sudden death,&uot; said Cathedral head coach Ken Beesley. &uot;The playoffs are now for us. We can’t relax after now.&uot;
The win over St. Andrews kept Cathedral from having to beat Loyd Star by more than 11 runs to make the playoffs.
Cathedral was trailing 5-3 going into the bottom of the fourth when Ben Eidt and Key Smith both walked with one man out.
Senior Stephen Edwards then ripped a ball to the wall for a triple, scoring both runs.
&uot;I was looking at a 2-0 count and he (Michael Walton)&160;threw the ball on the outside half of the plate,&uot;&160;Edwards said. &uot;It was fat enough that I&160;was able to hit it hard. I haven’t had a hit feel that good in a while.&uot;
Cathedral has not sat out the playoffs since 1987.
&uot;We need to play Loyd Star the same way we played tonight,&uot; Edwards said. &uot;I&160;don’t want my last game to be against McComb.&uot;
Stephen Bush followed Edwards’ triple with a double to score Edwards.
Bush started on the mound for Cathedral before being replaced by Christopher Martin in the fifth.
&uot;I was throwing my fastball hard at first, but it kind of slacked off,&uot; Bush said.
The Green Wave didn’t struggle at the plate, collecting two singles and a double.
&uot;It’s easier to pitch when you can get the runs,&uot; Bush said. &uot;I was just up there trying to get the base hit.&uot;
Casey Rodgers singled and Charlie Norris doubled to end the scoring in the inning.
Cathedral scored one run in the first as Jeremi Hardy walked and Key Smith singled.
St. Andrews scored three runs in the third as Sherwood Collette hit a 3-run homer.
Cathedral tied the game in the bottom of the third on singles by Eidt, Smith and Bush and Josh Torrey doubled.
St. Andrews used four singles for its two-run fourth inning.
The Saints added a run in the fifth and sixth innings.
Cathedral got one run back in the sixth as Bush singled and Rodgers tripled.
Norris entered the game in the sixth inning with two on and nobody out.
After a single, Norris retired the next six batters. Trea Brown singled to right field, but Chris Norris fired to Eidt who relayed the ball to Hardy for the out.
&uot;There was pressure,but I just wanted to go in there and get some outs,&uot; Norris said. &uot;They put the game in my hand and I just wanted to do a good job.&uot;
Cathedral, which moved up to Class 2A this school year, plays at Loyd Star Friday at 7 p.m. following a junior varsity game.
St. Andrews, 15-8 overall and 7-2 in district, plays Richland Friday.
The first place team hosts a playoff game next Thursday, while the runner-up will be on the road in the first game of a best-of-three series beginning next Thursday.
