VIDALIA, La. — Vidalia High tied the team record for most home runs in a season by slamming four home runs Friday in a District 3-2A game against Ferriday.
That was about the only suspense as the Vikings cruised past Ferriday 20-0 to stay unbeaten in district play.
Kevin Laird tied the season home run record of 36 that was set in 1998 by slamming a grand slam in the fourth inning.
&uot;There wasn’t any pressure,&uot; Laird said. &uot;Coach (Johnny Lee) Hoffpauir said he was fixing to put the junior varsity in the game and I asked him if I could stay in if I hit a home run. He just told me to get up there and hit the ball. It felt good.&uot;
Laird, who also had two singles, said he knew the bases were loaded.
&uot;I’m always looking for a chance to pick up runs for the team,&uot; he said.
The grand slam was Laird’s first-ever and was his third home run of the season.
Jarrett Hoffpauir hit a solo home run in the second and added a single, Matt Dillon slammed a 2-run home run in the third and Adam Probst tallied a grand slam in the second.
Probst also singled and doubled.
&uot;It’s hard to keep concentrating when you are winning that big,&uot; Probst said. &uot;We just wanted to keep playing the best we could.&uot;
Vidalia, 16-7, plays at Crowville today at 3 p.m. in a battle of two 4-0 district teams.
The Vikings were scheduled to host Winnsboro today, but the Vidalia-Crowville contest was rained out for the second time on Wednesday and was unable to be played Thursday.
The Winnsboro game has been cancelled and will not be made up.
Vidalia plays at Block Monday before hosting Crowville next Thursday.
&uot;Our defense hasn’t been tested in a few games, so it’s kind of like starting the season over,&uot; Hoffpauir said. &uot;I don’t know what to expect. I thought our approach to the plate was good tonight. We just need to carry that over against Crowville.&uot;
Ferriday, in its first year since dropping its baseball program several years ago, is 2-6 overall and 2-4 in district.
