With baseball playoffs going on now, graduation right around the corner and the Jefferson Street Methodist Church production of &uot;Heaven Can Wait&uot; slated for this weekend, Trinity senior Bobby Craig was glad to get one important piece of business behind him Wednesday.
Craig signed a basketball scholarship with Belhaven College.
&uot;I’m really happy about going to Belhaven,&uot; Craig said. &uot;It’s like a college Trinity.&uot;
Craig considered one other school after being recruited earlier by a community college in Wyoming.
&uot;I heard they were interested in me and Kris (teammate Thomson),&uot; he said. &uot;I&160;looked them up on the Internet and liked waht I saw. But I never could get in touch with the coach. Then Belhaven called and&160;I really liked it there.&uot;
The 6-foot-2 Craig said he will work hard to get some playing time next year for the NAIA school.
&uot;I could play, but if I don’t I won’t be real disappointed,&uot; he said. &uot;I need to get quicker and a lot stronger.&uot;
Craig, the son of Wade and the late Elizabeth Craig, averaged 21.73 points per game and made 69.32 percent of his free throws.
Craig hit 93 3-pointers during his senior year.
&uot;I don’t feel like anyone has a better outside shot,&uot;&160;he said. &uot;I&160;have worked on that a long time and I think I have just about perfected it. I’m confident in that part of my game. I just need to work on my defense, ball-handling and getting stronger.&uot;
Craig said his mental approach is also strong.
&uot;I always want the ball, especially in the last seconds,&uot; he said.
Craig made an 18 on his ACT and carries a 3.2 grade point average.
He plans on studying psychology at Belhaven.
King said he is going to miss Trinity, especially athletic director and football, basketball and baseball coach David King.
&uot;He really runs a great athletic program,&uot; King said. &uot;He is so motivational. He’s not just a coach, he’s like a best friend.&uot;
