After a public hearing, attended by only one person Monday, the Adams County Board of Supervisors approved a nonhazardous rubbish disposal site for south Adams County.

Once the board made its decision Bettye Smith, of Farr Road, the one person who spoke against the site, stormed out of the supervisors’ meeting room on State Street.

&uot;I knew it would be. That’s the way you all are,&uot;&160;she said before slamming the door behind her.

Monday’s vote authorizes Adams County to amend its Solid Waste Plan for the Triad Disposal Company project.

The project still needs final approval from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) but will cover about 45 acres, near the intersection of U.S. 84 and Old Highway 84, No 1.

During the hearing, Smith told the board she opposed the site because of possible smell and pollution.

&uot;I just can’t understand why people can’t find an unpopulated area to put this place,&uot;&160;said Smith, who lives about two miles from the proposed site. &uot;I think it’s wrong to put it out there.&uot;

However, officials with Triad Disposal say the site is only intended for paper products and nonhazardous items like construction debris, natural vegetation and furniture.

For example, the site could take cardboard or wood chips but could not take household garbage, oil or chemical containers.

&uot;We can take rubbish from industry. We can’t take industrial waste,&uot; said Jim Willard, of Triad.

And no smell will be associated with the site.

&uot;We can’t put anything hazardous in the site,&uot; Willard said.

Supervisor Darryl Grennell was the only board member who did not vote in favor of amending the solid waste plan.

Grennell abstained from voting because he feared the project could still lead to area-contamination as the disposed items decomposed.
