Briarfield Academy’s girls and Chamberlain-Hunt Academy’s boys tennis teams won their respected divisions Wednesday at the MPSA South A State Tennis Tournament finals at the Duncan Park tennis courts.

Chamberlain Hunt’s boys team won South State for an unprecedented 10th straight time, dating back to 1991. The Wildcat boys are the three-time defending state champion.

CHA won the state title in 1991 under coach Doug Broom and six out of eight under coach Rocky Abraham.

CHA finished with 14 points.

Briarfield came in second place with 10 1/2 points. Presbyterian Christian was third with five points.

&uot;I had to sweat this one out,&uot; Abraham said. &uot;Briarfield will be our toughest competition at state.&uot;

Briarfield’s girls team won South State for the fourth straight year and is also the three-time defending State champion.

Briarfield finished with 14 1/2 points. PCS was second with eight points and Huntington third with seven points.

&uot;I’ve got a good young team and we’re losing only one senior,&uot; said Briarfield tennis coach Lynn Brown. &uot;I think we’ve got a real good chance to win state.&uot;

Besides Briarfield’s and CHA’s continued dominance, the other big story of Wednesday’s finals was the weather.

Mid-morning rain delayed the finals for nearly an hour and forty-five minutes and forced the matches to be moved from the Trinity School courts to Duncan Park.

Huntington’s mixed doubles team of Bridget Anders and Tom Terry Milliken won by forfeit.

Their expected opponents, Tallulah’s Kristie Headley and Cole Williams, advanced to the finals but could not play because Williams was playing at a golf tournament.

By advancing to the finals, however, Headley and Williams will play in the state tournament.

In the No. 2 girls doubles finals, Trinity’s Lindsey Hunt and Pheobe Winters defeated Huntington’s Rachel Anders and Katie Cole 6-4, 6-4. Hunt and Winters defeated Glenbrook’s Kelsey McConnell and Ashley Payne Tuesday.

&uot;It was a tight match. We are always tight when we play Huntington,&uot; Winters said. &uot;We could’ve played better. But they’re really good.&uot;

&uot;After two straight third runner-ups, it feels real good to win South State,&uot; Hunt said.

Mary Kathryn Schneider of Briarfield won the No. 2 girls singles division with a tough 7-5, 6-4 victory over Presbyterian Christian’s Tiffany Silman.

Briarfield’s Jessica Tomlinson defeated PCS’s Kristi Silman in the No. 1 girls singles finals in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

In the No. 1 Boys Singles finals, CHA’s Ian Doherty defeated Briarfield’s Gabe Gattle 6-3, 6-0.

&uot;It feels good being South State champion,&uot; Doherty said. &uot;I really expected a tougher match.&uot;

Jackie Brown and Sarah Fortenberry of Briarfield won the No. 1 girls doubles finals over Huntington’s Sara Ashmore and Mary-Ella Green 7-6 (6), 6-0.

Chamberlain Hunt’s Cass Dodgen and Daniel McFatter won the No. 1 boys doubles finals for the second year in a row, defeating Briarfield’s Phillip Tomlinson and Pete Lensing 6-1, 6-1.

The boys team champion, however, was not determined until CHA’s Asher Rosenberg defeated BA’s Matthew Brown in the No. 2 boys singles finals 7-6 (5), 6-3.

In the No. 2 boys doubles finals, CHA’s Matthew Burrell and Jordan Hammond defeated BA’s Nicholas Hopkins and Will Mullen in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

All champions and runners-up from South State will compete at the State Class A Tournament on May 10-11 at the Bridges Tennis Center in Jackson.

The state tournament will take place on May 10, while the overall tournament is May 11.
