Cathedral High’s golf team is in third place with a score of 345 after one day of play at the Class 2A State Tournament Tuesday at the Forest Country Club in Forest.

St. John, the three-time defending Class 2A state champion, is in first place with a 327.

Robert McCormick had a 79, David Myers an 80, Timmy Bertucci an 84 and Todd Smith an 84 for St. John.

&uot;St. John is going to be around 325,&uot; said Cathedral golf coach Terry Moffett. &uot;To beat them you have to shoot a 305 or 310.&uot;

Clarkdale was only six strokes back in second place with a 333, followed by Cathedral.

Christopher Martin had a 77 for Cathedral. Mark Carter had an 81, Josh Ford a 93 and Tyler Crisp a 94.

&uot;Christopher and Mark can shoot with the best,&uot; Moffett said.

Wyler Murray had a 98, but his score was not counted in the team score.

&uot;The first five holes, especially three through five, decided our fate. We were about 20 over at that point. You can call it nerves. You can call it jitters. You can call it inexperience.&uot;

Bruce and Newton were tied for fourth place, each with a score of 351.

Booneville was sixth with a team score of 353. Baldwyn was seventh with a 359.

Baldwyn’s Nick Armstrong tied Martin for the lowest individual score of the day with a 77.

Ackerman finished in eighth place with a 374 and Sumrall was ninth with a 385.

Despite trailing by 18 shots, Moffett still believes his team can make up the deficit.

&uot;We’re going to have to make up on average about four strokes per man,&uot; Moffett said.

&uot;It has been done before. Tomorrow’s another day. I hope and pray tomorrow’s our day.&uot;
