Residents: Switching streets to one-way was dead-end

In their Tuesday meeting, Natchez aldermen said they plan to study the issue thoroughly — getting input from all those affected — before they will consider making further changes in the direction of traffic in the area of Bishop and Beaumont streets.

As of Friday, Bishop Street was made a one-way street, with traffic running from North Union Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Street. On Beaumont Street, the direction of traffic was reversed, with traffic running one way from Bishop Street to East Woodlawn Street.

Some aldermen said they have received complaints from constituents who say the city did not get enough input from area residents before making the change and that they now have to go out of their way to get to their homes.

In the council’s Finance Committee meeting, Alderman Theodore &uot;Bubber&uot;&160;West recommended that the direction of traffic on the streets go back to the way it was before the change and that the city study the issue further before making additional changes. But Natchez Police Chief Willie Huff said changing the direction of traffic again so soon after it changed the first time would confuse the public. A resident of the area, Kenneth Young, told the council in its regular meeting that motorists still go the wrong way and speed down the streets, putting children at risk.

&uot; There’s little police presence there,&uot;&160;Young said.

Later, Huff said officers are patrolling the area and notifying motorists of the change in direction and will soon begin giving tickets to motorists going the wrong way or committing other traffic violations.
