woodville — It took three extra days for Wilkinson County Christian Academy and Glenbrook School to take the field against one another.

But when they faced off Monday, the home-standing Rams looked like a team that had been ready to play all weekend.

WCCA jumped all over the visiting Apaches from Minden, La., by scoring 23 points in the first quarter and 13 in the second quarter to take a commanding lead at the half.

The Rams then cruised to a 43-8 victory by milking the continuously-running clock with a running game that accounted for 292 yards in the contest.

“Our line blocked as a group, and that’s what we look to do all season,” WCCA head coach David Wright said. “And we got non-stop running from Caleb Sterling, Jamal Vessell and Quincy Thompson.”

The Rams’ offense helped itself out with the big play Monday afternoon as well. WCCA managed 13 offensive plays that gained 10 yards or more.

Sterling got the biggest highlights with touchdown runs of 33 and 86 yards. He finished the game with 132 yards on four carries. Thompson, Vessell, Austin Goodfellow and Christian Kerr each rushed for at least 25 yards in the game. Goodfellow was the team’s second-leading rusher with 64 yards and a touchdown.

But Wright said it was the defense that made the biggest plays in the first half.

“The offense was set up by great defense,” he said. “The defense made some big plays from the first series on to give us field position.”

The Rams forced three turnovers and a safety in the opening half.

Kerr led the defense with six tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. Thompson also had a fumble recovery that he ran back 53 yards to the Glenbrook 1-yard line that set up the Rams’ third touchdown.

Wright said it was huge for the Rams to get off to a good start in their first home game, especially after having to wait three days to play.

“It was a challenge,” he said. “But the fans really came out and supported us for the first home game, and the boys had to get in here ready to play.”

The scoring started after the Rams’ defense pushed Glenbrook back 12 yards on the first three plays of the game. Glenbrook took a safety on fourth-and-22 when a high snap sailed over Glenbrook punter Jason Robertson’s head, and the Rams led 2-0 less than two minutes into the contest.

Taylor Prevost connected with Kerr on an 18-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive. Prevost tacked on the extra point to give WCCA a 9-0 lead.

Two long touchdown runs by Sterling and a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Prevost gave WCCA a commanding 30-0 lead early in the second quarter. Jacob Vannoy added a 2-yard plunge late in the second quarter to make the score 36-0 at halftime.

Goodfellow scored his touchdown midway through the third quarter, and Glenbrook finally got on the board late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Regan Edwards scrambled 19 yards to score. Edwards connected with Jalen Patterson for the two-point conversion to end the scoring.

Wright said he was happy to get the win and start the season 2-0, but the Monday game means the Rams have a short week to prepare for Centreville (3-0) Friday.

“We are behind the eight ball,” he said. “We have Centreville coming up, and we have a couple of days to get ready. We know that game means a lot to the town of Woodville.”
