ACCS offense lies dormant in loss Monday

NATCHEZ — Turkey is notorious for making people drowsy, and if Monday night was any indication, the Adams County Christian boys must have still been feeling the effects of a large Thanksgiving meal.
For three quarters, the Rebels (5-4) seemed to sleepwalk as they struggled to put points on the board against Brookhaven Academy.
The Cougars would end up pounding ACCS 63-29, with the Rebels scoring 18 of their 29 points in the fourth quarter, after the Cougars began subbing in their backups.
“Our offense couldn’t hit shots the first three quarters, and ultimately, that was our demise tonight,” ACCS head coach Rick Fife said.
Fife credited the strong defensive effort of Brookhaven Academy for his team’s shooting troubles, saying they made it difficult for the Rebel players to play comfortably.
“They played well in man-to-man defense, and at times, we just stood around and watched offensively, and didn’t make cuts (to the basket),” Fife said.
Much of the discomfort for the Rebels players came from the fact that the Cougars had a distinct size advantage, Fife said.
“That definitely altered several of our shots. (Their size) was definitely in the back of our guys’ minds every time they went up for a shot. We were afraid of getting blocked.”
The Rebels didn’t score until there was 3:22 left in the first quarter, when Lee Swinny sunk a two-point basket. They managed just five points in the first quarter, and two in the second.
The third quarter was more of the same for the Rebels, who once again failed to score in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the quarter. Jake Brown finally ended the drought for ACCS when he hit a two-point basket with 3:11 to go in the third.
Swinny, who finished with 12 points, was the only Rebels player to score in double digits. He also sustained an injury in the second quarter that limited his ability to play.
“Swinny made some really big shots in key minutes,” Fife said. “He has a high ankle sprain, and is day-to-day.”
Brookhaven Academy was led in scoring by Sidney Chaffin, who tallied 18 points. Jake Reed added 15 points and Jamison Powell finished with 12 points.
“I didn’t think we showed up defensively at all,” Fife said. “We allowed too many transitional and easy baskets underneath the rim tonight.”
ACCS fell to 5-4 on the season.
The ACCS varsity girls didn’t fare much better against Brookhaven Academy, falling 54-14.
Rachel Holloway led in scoring for the Lady Rebels with six points. Kaitlan Melton and Marlee Wadsworth both had three points, and Taylor Welch added two points.
The Lady Rebels are now 9-3 on the season.
