CENTREVILLE — After a five-hour chase through town Sunday, the Centreville Police Department captured a local man who fled from officers in the morning.

Michael Johnson, 30, 745 Old Highway 33, Centreville, was booked into the Amite County Sheriff’s Office on charges of disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.

Centreville Police Chief Jimmy Ray Reese said one of his officers spotted Johnson at approximately 9:30 a.m. on the outskirts of town.

“We’ve been after him for a couple of months for several warrants, but he took off running right when our officer spotted him,” Reese said.

After searching for several hours, Reese said he enlisted the help of the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola Chase Team and Amite County Sheriff’s Office deputies to assist his officers.

“One of my officers finally caught him sneaking through some wooded areas,” Reese said. “We got him cornered in a little block of the woods, and he didn’t resist after that.”

Johnson was captured at approximately 2:40 p.m., Reese said.

“All the neighbors in that subdivision were very helpful and looked around to see if they saw him in their backyards,” Reese said. “I’d like to thank the Angola team and Amite County Sheriff’s for helping with the search.”

Reese said Johnson is a convicted sex offender and that the Wilkinson County Sheriff’s Office was investigating him on possible charges of rape and burglary.

No bond was set for Johnson as of Sunday afternoon.
