Natchez High students got an unwelcome break in exams Friday after someone called in a bomb threat to the school.

Officials evacuated the school, forcing about 1,050 students to stand outside for more than 30 minutes as police officers performed a bomb sweep of the campus.

&uot;For the first time in my life I actually want to be in a class,&uot; said Jimmie Johnson, an NHS student complaining about the heat. &uot;I (even) play football, and I’m hot.&uot;

Students were taking their fourth period exams at around 11:50 a.m. when two calls were placed to the Natchez Police Department warning of a bomb at Natchez High. Police suspect the calls were made from a cellular phone.

&uot;They were laughing while they said it,&uot; said Natchez Police Chief Willie Huff.

Officers were sent to the campus and classrooms evacuated as a result. The sweep found no explosive devices.

&uot;Nothing like a little excitement at the end of the year,&uot; said Superintendent Dr. Carl Davis. &uot;The kids obviously wanted to create a little excitement for the administrators.&uot;

Davis said officials believe they know who placed the call and will seek prosecution.

&uot;We are not going to tolerate&uot; bomb threats or other disruptions during the school day, Davis said.

Natchez High students will take their last exams Monday then break for the summer.
