Parker Brumfield got to hang out with some major leaguers recently — and he may have learned some language his parents won’t appreciate.
The Trinity fifth-grader was named honorary bat boy for the Chicago Cubs’ Memorial Day game versus the Atlanta Braves. Brumfield is the son of Cynthia Brumfield of Natchez.
Brumfield’s three uncles, Harris, Frank and Hardy Brumfield, who live in Chicago, attended an auction late last year in Chicago at City Day School and bid on the opportunity to be a bat boy for a 200 Chicago Cubs game. &uot;(My uncles) went to the auction, and somehow they got it and gave it to me for Christmas,&uot; he said.
Brumfield described his experience among the major leaguers as &uot;awesome.&uot;
&uot;I got to clubhouse at the ball park, and right when I got there, I went up to Sammy Sosa and asked him for his autograph,&uot; he said.
Brumfiled said that since he had nothing with him that Sosa could sign, &uot;he just signed my shirt.&uot;
After spending time with the big leaguers, &uot;I heard a bunch of words that I don’t think I was supposed to have heard,&uot; Brumfield said.
Brumfield said while he wanted to talk to Cubs manager Don Baylor, he decided against it.
&uot;He was much bigger than me, and he didn’t look like he wanted to be bothered,&uot; Brumfield said.
Brumfield did talk with the likes of Kerry Wood and Eric Young. &uot;Kerry Wood and I played a game together during the game. It was fun,&uot; he said.
Brumfield said it was most exciting for him because &uot;my favorite team is Atlanta, and I was batboy for the Cubs against the Braves.&uot;
&uot;I would very definitely like to do it again,&uot; he said. &uot;It was as much fun as I’ve ever had.&uot;
