Matt Barnes and Luke Brumfield combined to pitch a one-hitter as Scott’s Welding defeated El Toro Oil 8-2 Friday at Ballew-Bowlin Field to win the Dixie Youth 9-10 City Championship.

Barnes was the winning pitcher, giving up two runs and one hit while striking out four and walking four in three innings.

Brumfield struck out five and walked two in three innings. He also went 2-for-3 with two singles and two runs batted in.

&uot;It was a good one,&uot; said Scott’s Welding head coach William Barnes. &uot;It was a total team effort.

&uot;Matt did a good job. He struggled a little with his control, but he got his pitches over when he needed to. Luke came in and threw good strikes. We had some good defensive play as well. (Catcher) Ross Smith and (second baseman) Josh Roberts played really well.&uot;

El Toro scored both of its runs and got its only hit in the bottom of the first inning.

After Lee Guedon drew a one-out walk and Colby Verucchi reached second on an error, Jon Jon Floyd singled to scored both runs.

Barnes allowed only three base runners ovr the next 2 2/3 innings.

&uot;The first inning was pretty bad,&uot; Matt Barnes said. &uot;I settled down after that.&uot;

Scott’s Welding scored one run in the top of the second when Harrison Burns walked with the bases loaded to score Tremaine Ford.

Scott’s Welding took the lead for good by scoring three runs in the top of the third inning.

Brumfield singled to score Julian Stubbs and two runs scored on an error.

El Toro Oil had a chance to get back in the game when Brumfield walked Juan Gray and Rod Allen with two outs.

Scott’s Welding broke the game open with four runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Stubbs scored on a single by Brumfield. James Luster scored when Duncan Guedon drew a bases-loaded walk. Brumfield scored on a passed ball. Barnes scored when Eric Dollar walked with the bases loaded.

Brumfield then struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth.

Verucchi took the loss for El Toro Oil, giving up five runs and three hits while striking out five and walking four in 5 1/3 innings.
