Board of aldermen grants extension to senior center

Natchez aldermen have granted a 10-day extension for renovations to the Natchez Senior Multi-Purpose Center.
Work on the center was scheduled for completion in May, but a few tasks, such as installing air conditioning in several remaining rooms, are yet to be done.
James Johnston, community development coordinator, on Tuesday asked the board for the extension and requested approval for a non-cash change order in the amount of $2,025 for the senior center. He said the project still has $7,000 remaining in the budget that will be put to use in completing the renovations.
Johnston also told the mayor and board members he will submit a grant application to the Mississippi Department of Economic and Community Development on Monday for funds to help rebuild Government Fleet Road.

4The board heard Municipal Judge John M. Tipton’s gross collection report of $69,532 for month of May. The net amount received by the city came to $45,486. Tipton was recently elected vice-president of the Mississippi Municipal Judges Association.
4Approved a request of City Engineer David Gardner to advertise for construction of a Corps of Engineers disposal site in connection with construction of the convention center.
4Recognized the achievements of Shannon Burt and Bobby Ewing and family as part of the the bimonthly PROUD&160;awards. Burt was recently named Master Teacher of the Year by ETV of New York. She is a ninth-grade teacher at Natchez High School.
The Ewing family was recognized for their involvement with the Miss-Lou Annual Easter Egg Hunt, held each year at Duncan Park.
4Named Jerry Rouse, city electrical employee, employee of the month for June.
4Heard from Burnett Bridgewater, Minorville Jubilee organizer, who expressed appreciation of the board’s support of the event. Bridgewater presented Ward 2 Alderman George Harden and Mayor Larry L. &uot;Butch&uot; Brown with plaques.
4Heard from Hal Davis, 304 Martin Luther King St., who talked about a pool hall located at 308 Martin Luther King St. Davis said he had intended to make a complaint to the board, but had since reconsidered.

4Tourism&160;Management Director Walter Tipton reminded the mayor and board of this weekend’s Natchez Bicycle Classic and the Isle of Capri grand opening ceremony.
4Ward 3 Alderman Sue Stedman reported the city auditorium renovations are under way.
4Ward 6 Alderman Jake Middleton delivered the recreation department report. The North Natchez Summer Day Camp is busy with activities, and a few of the day campers will give an arts and crafts presentation at the board’s next meeting, scheduled for July 11.
4Natchez Downtown Development Association Executive Director Tammi Mullins appealed for course marshal volunteers for this weekend’s bike race.
Mullins also presented Brown with a T-shirt from her agency in appreciation of his support.
