NATCHEZ — Man’s best friends have a place to keep their paws dry while Tropical Storm Isaac determines its path and severity on the Miss-Lou.

The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society is offering a free shelter for 50 canine and feline friends during the storm.

NACHS Board President Barbara Platte said residents can call to schedule a time to drop off their animals at the old Waste Management warehouse at 501 North Wall St.

All animals need to have proof of up-to-date vaccinations and rabies tests to gain access to the shelter, Platte said.

“Once we get all that information, we’ll take them in and put bands on them with their information on them,” Platte said. “Right now we have 50 cages setup ready for the animals.”

The warehouse previously served as a shelter last year during the Mississippi River flood, Platte said.

“That was our first time doing it last year for the flood, and we learned a lot after that,” Platte said. “We had to get everything set up last time and deal with all the crowds.

“This time we had everything there, we just had to get the dust off.”

Each animal will be fed at the shelter and Platte said any special medication should be dropped off with the animal.
