VIDALIA — While it was bitterly cold and snowy outside, the Vidalia Vikings were doing their part to keep the spectators inside the Vidalia High gym warm and toasty with their hot shooting.
The Vikings (6-3) scored at least 21 points in every quarter as they pounded Tensas High 97-59 on the second night of the Ronnie Brown Memorial Basketball Tournament.
“Our offense was clicking tonight,” Vidalia coach Robert Sanders said. “We like to run on the offensive end, but we need to start better.”
The Viking duo of Torrey Dixon and Gary Stewart scored 55 of the 97 points, with Dixon scoring 29 and Stewart chipping in 26, even though both of them sat much of the second half.
Vidalia’s pressure defense also led to the Vikings’ success, as they forced numerous Panther turnovers that got them into their fast break offense.
“We looked good in the full court press,” Sanders said. “There was still a period where we sat back and let them take it to us, but overall I was pleased with the defensive effort.”
Vidalia started off the game strong and led 21-10 after the first quarter.
They expanded their lead to 48-25 at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half, even as they went to mostly backups in the fourth quarter.
In addition to Dixon and Stewart, Vidalia was led by Quartrell Thomas with 10 points and Eric Bell with eight.
Tensas High was led by Roderick Jones and George Robinson with 13 points apiece while Nathaniel Jackson had 12 and Tommy Brown chipped in with 11.
The Ronnie Brown Memorial Basketball Tournament concludes today with three games.
The Vidalia junior varsity boys will play Ferriday at 5 p.m., followed by the Ferriday girls facing off against Tensas High. The final game of the tournament will be the Vidalia boys versus Ferriday.
