Three members of the Natchez USA Summer Track Team have a chance to qualify for national competition today. Darrius Edwards, Rosyln Minor and Clifton Johnson will be competing in the regional track meet today in Nashville, Tenn.
The top three finishers in each event from district meets held in Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee and Alabama are competing.
The top three finishers at regionals qualify for the U.S. National track meet, which will be held in Buffalo, N.Y. July 29.
Janice Davis of Natchez received an automatic bye for nationals because she will be competing in Montreal Monday for the USA track team in an international meet against Canada.
Davis qualified in the 400-meters and will compete in either the 400-meter open sprint or on the 1600-meter relay team.
At regionals, Edwards will competing in 110-meter high hurdles in the Intermediate 15-16 age group.
Minor, competing in her first regional, will compete in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles in the 17-18 age group.
&uot;For me it’s a challenge because it’s my first time competing in the regionals and I don’t know who my competition will be,&uot; Minor said.
Minor is a stronger hurdler than sprinter.
&uot;I think I’ll have a strong chance of qualifying in the 100-meter hurdles, but the 400s I don’t know,&uot; she said. &uot;This is my first time in the 400s so I don’t know what to expect. But in the 100s I’ll come out with a blast.&uot;
Johnson, also competing in his first regional, will participate in three events in the regionals – the 3000-meter run, the 1500-meter run and the 800-meter run in the Intermediate 15-15 age group.
The team is coached by Henry &uot;Doc&uot; Woods.
