The last chance for Natchez area golfers to compete in what is billed as the world’s largest golf tournament will be this weekend.
But, only if a few more teams sign up to compete in the Oldsmobile Scramble at Duncan Park.
To send a team to the sectional tournament on Aug. 11 at Beau Pr\u00E9, 10 teams must compete in the tournament at Duncan Park.The deadline to enter the tournament is today.
Right now, only four teams are signed up to play, Gray said, but he is trying to find some.
Gray spent all day Thursday on the phone looking for teams.
&uot;I have been on the phone all day long,&uot; Gray said. &uot;We need teams.&uot;
Other than getting a chance to play for a national title, the Oldsmobile Scramble is one of the best deals in golf, Gray said.
&uot;You get about $120 worth of merchandise for the $50 entry fee,&uot; Gray said.
The $50 entry free includes a round of golf with a cart, 12 golf balls and gift certificates.
Other than being the largest golf tournament in the world, the tournament also gives high handicap golfers their only chance to compete for a national title.
The handicap is important, because each player is required to have a certified United States Golf Association handicap to enter the tournament. And that’s where the problem lies, Gray said. Most public golf courses do not keep handicap records, he said, and Duncan Park only has 17 registered handicap golfers.
So Gray said he is encouraging all of the golfers who participated in earlier qualifying tournaments another shot at the Olds Scramble title this weekend. To enter the tournament call the Duncan Park Pro Shop at 442-5955.
