After months of almost continuous head scratching, now that traffic is flowing correctly, the new continuous flow intersection makes a good bit of sense.

Marrying two federal highways, U.S. 61 and U.S. 84, the intersection in front of Natchez Regional Medial Center has always been a bit of a doozy.

Once construction began to rework the intersection, the doozy that was familiar to us became an obstacle course at times with walls of concrete barriers and orange barrels guiding the ever-changing course of traffic.

But after months and months of work, officials with the Mississippi Department of Transportation officially opened up the proper traffic flow last week and, well, nothing bad happened.

Many locals were expecting mass confusion as it’s difficult to describe with words — and even pictures — how the intersection was to work.

But now that we’ve ridden through it a time or two, we’ve come to the conclusion that all of the fears of problems were much ado about nothing.

And, in a way, isn’t that the way traffic is supposed to flow — so smoothly that you don’t really notice?

Our hats off to the good folks at the Mississippi Department of Transportation, including in particular Executive Director Larry L. “Butch” Brown and Southern District Transportation Commissioner Wayne Brown.

MDOT’s investment in Natchez’s infrastructure in recent years is greatly evident and much appreciated.

As workers begin to put the final coat of asphalt on the intersection, we’ll probably experience some delays.

But now that we see what the end result will be, we can stand a few temporary traffic jams, especially since we know what’s on the horizon.
