NATCHEZ — Colton Terrell got his chance at redemption Friday night, and he took full advantage.

Terrell rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns for Centreville Academy in its 37-6 victory over Trinity Episcopal Day School, helping to erase a few of the bad memories from last season’s playoff loss to the Saints.

“It’s a relief (to get the win),” Terrell said after the game. “I dropped a couple punts, and I really hurt the team last year, and I just wanted to try to help get the win (this year).”

Terrell set the tone of Friday night’s game early with a 62-yard touchdown run on the Tigers’ first offensive series. He added a second touchdown run in a second quarter that saw Centreville explode for 21 points and put the game away.

The win ended Centreville’s three-game slide against Trinity, and assistant coach Brian Stutzman said it was nice to finally beat the Saints again.

“It’s good to get a win,” he said. “We know it’s real hard to come here and get a victory.”

Centreville controlled both sides of the ball Friday night and outgained Trinity 256 yards to 79.

Trinity’s lone score of the game — and its first of the season — came in the final seconds when freshman Demarcus Fleming scored on a 19-yard touchdown run. Fleming finished with 77 yards on 10 carries.

“For the second week in a row, we made too many mistakes in critical times,” Trinity head coach Josh Loy said. “That can’t happen.”

Centreville head coach Bill Hurst, who had heart surgery in July and has been absent from the team for much of the preseason, was on the sidelines Friday night lurking behind the scenes and occasionally taking center stage to help coach the Tigers to the victory.

Hurst spoke to his team before the game, at halftime and after the win and said he was mostly keeping an eye on the defense. He said he was pleased with the win but wants to see improvement.

“I think the offense played bad (in the first half),” Hurst said. “We jumped offside a couple of times, and they stopped concentration on what they were doing. The defense, overall, played pretty good.”

Centreville dominated the first half and took a 30-0 lead into the break.

In addition to Terrell’s two first-half touchdowns, Randy Bell scored on a 35-yard run, and Casey Haygood scored on a quarterback sneak to end the first half. Centreville also added a safety in the opening half.

The Tigers added seven more points in the third quarter when Haygood connected with Gage Chandler for a 26-yard touchdown pass.

Haygood finished 4 of 7 in passing for 80 yards and one touchdown.

Loy said he is frustrated with Trinity’s struggles on offense early this season, but the coaching staff will do what it can to learn from the tough 0-2 start.

“We knew with Jefferson County and Centreville we had our hands full,” he said. “We knew it was going to be tough, but we didn’t play well, and that’s not taking away from Centreville, who is a fine football team.

“We just have to keep breaking down film, coach who is here and, we’re going to get better and see the benefits.”

Centreville (2-0) will host Parklane Academy next week, while Trinity travels to face Bowling Green School.
