Saints avoid season opener repeat

It seemed an awful lot like last year’s Trinity High School season opener. The Saints were plagued by injures and lost the game by a ton. This year, however, it was the Union Saints defeated, as the Trinity Saints rolled to an easy 35-7 home win Friday.

Junior quarterback Chad Ridley looked good in his first game at the helm, showing great scrambling ability and rushing for 114 yards on six attempts, with two touchdowns.

One of those scores came on Trinity’s first offensive play of the game. Ridley ran a sweep to the outside, picked up a few key blocks and outran the safeties for a 72-yard touchdown.

&uot;Coach said run the sweep, so I did, and I got some great blocks,&uot; Ridley said. &uot;I couldn’t have done it without the other 10 guys out there.&uot;

Ridley’s second score began as a pass, but no one was open and Ridley ducked his head and ran, scampering 17 yards to the endzone.

Freshman running back Walt Ketchings was also impressive, rushing for 55 yards on six attempts, with two touchdowns.

Both of Ketchings’ scores were set up by senior Cole Brown.

Late in the first quarter, Brown made a spectacular 14-yard catch, just scraping his toes in bounds to put Trinity inside the 10-yard line. Ketchings scored three plays later on a 5-yard rumble up the middle.

Ketchings’ second score came after a Brown interception was returned 37-yards to the Union 4-yard line. Ketchings’ 4-yard touchdown came two plays later.

Brown wasn’t finished however, as he scored the final touchdown of the game on a 9-yard run.

Union’s lone score came on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Clay Cox to receiver &uot;Peanut&uot; McGraw.

Injuries decimated the Union team, so much so that officials shortened the length of the fourth quarter from 12 minutes to four because Union could barely keep 11 healthy players on the field.

&uot;I think it came down to conditioning,&uot; Trinity head coach David King said. &uot;We were in better shape than they were.&uot;

Ridley said Trinity fans and opponents can expect more of the same for the remaining games on the schedule.

&uot;If we play together, we’ll be all right,&uot; he said.

&uot;Even if we don’t win, they’ll know they played Trinity.&uot;
