A routine traffic violation stop late Friday night turned violent, leaving a Louisiana State Trooper and a Jena man hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
According to state police reports, Trooper Mark Davis stopped Victor L. Barron, 38, of Jena for allegedly speeding about 3 miles west of Ferriday on U.S. 84 shortly before 11 p.m. Friday.
Suspecting Barron of driving while intoxicated, Davis gave him a field sobriety test and proceeded to arrest Barron for his fourth alleged DWI offense when &uot;a struggle ensued over the trooper’s firearm,&uot; the report stated. During the struggle, the gun went off, striking Davis once and the suspect multiple times, reports stated.
Both the trooper and the suspect were transported by ambulance to Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday.
Barron was later transferred in critical condition, under guard, to Natchez Regional Medical Center for surgery. Hospital officials said Barron was in stable condition Saturday afternoon.
Senior Trooper Steve Childers said Davis’ condition is improving.
Reports stated Davis had non-life threatening injuries, and a full recovery is expected.
Until a full investigation can be completed, no additional information will be available, including Barron’s charges, Childers said. &uot; They still have to do some investigating before they figure out what he’s going to be charged with,&uot; he said.
