SICILY ISLAND, La. – The village government has gone through a shakeup this week, with both the clerk and police chief resigning.

At a special council meeting Wednesday, Mayor Ann Wycoff appointed assistant clerk Shawaner Lewis as interim clerk and said she would be overseeing the police chief’s office until a permanent chief is hired.

Clerk Barbara Jackson resigned at a Monday council meeting, and Police Chief Guy King announced his resignation Monday. He had actually turned in a letter of resignation two weeks before.

&uot;I’d had enough,&uot; Jackson said.

King said he would continue in his position until Friday to help ease the transition.

Wycoff also fired one of the village’s remaining two police officers and hired a new officer — J.L. George — who will need to be trained by the state, Wycoff said.

Wednesday evening, Wycoff said she hopes to have the other positions permanently filled soon.

&uot;We’re taking applications now,&uot; she said.

Wycoff said she is not concerned about the changes in the police department. &uot;For 10 or 15 years there was only one police officer,&uot; she said. &uot;We’re such a good community there isn’t much to worry about.&uot;

Likewise, Wycoff said she does not consider the shakeup in the village’s other positions to be a problem. &uot;We’re moving forward,&uot; she said.

Councilman Tim Ford said he opposed Wycoff’s firing of police officer Keith Berry. &uot;We’re going to have to spend the money to train him,&uot; he said of the newly hired officer.

Council members only approve changes in hiring of department heads, Ford said.
