FERRIDAY, La. – Cleanup efforts are continuing in Ferriday, from inmates cleaning up rights-of-way to rundown houses being condemned, according to Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin.

Sheriff Randy Maxwell recently began sending six additional Concordia Parish Correctional Facility inmates to mow grass, pick up trash and perform other cleanup tasks on the town’s rights-of-way.

The town already had the use of four inmates.

Now it has two crews of five prisoners, each with its own supervisor.

&uot;Being able to use those inmates has been a big help to us,&uot;&160;McGlothin said.

Such inmates have worked throughout Concordia Parish for more than 10 years, performing such tasks as mowing grass, landscaping and picking up litter.

In addition, an effort to condemn rundown structures is about to pick up steam.

A list of buildings to be condemned will be presented to the Ferriday Town Council for approval at its Sept. 12 regular meeting, McGlothin said.

He has also said that the town plans to enforce its ordinance regarding abandoned vehicles.

Also, all but one of Ferriday’s Town Council members have submitted names of two people in each district who would be willing to serve on a beautification committee.

The committee would suggest places in Ferriday that need to be cleaned up. The group would be made up of those citizens as well as members appointed by the Ferriday Garden Club and the Ferriday Chamber of Commerce.
