The Labor Day weekend will be a busy one for Beau Pré Country Club, as it will host two big golf tournaments. Today and Sunday, the Beau Pré Country Club Championship will take place. The next day, Beau Pré hosts the Labor Day Breakfast Scramble.
&uot;This tournament has taken place for 35 years,&uot; said Beau Pré golf pro Mark Powell of the club championship.
The club championship took place at the old Belwood Country Club from 1966 to 1998 and will see its second year at Beau Pré this weekend.
Powell said about 40 to 50 players will be participating in the tournament.
In 1999, P.Z. Brewer had a two-day score of 150 to win the Club Championship by two shots over Lloyd Trisler, Howard Jones and Bill Byrne.
&uot;P.Z. is the favorite to win again this year,&uot; Powell said. &uot;He played in the state senior’s tournament last week and finished in third place. He’s been playing real well lately.
&uot;We’ve just got a lot of guys who are playing well.&uot;
Powell also said some newcomers to the club championship this year.
&uot;We’ll have some people who did not play last year,&uot; he said. &uot;And we have a lot of low handicappers.&uot;
Tee times for the Club Championship will be at 8 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.
&uot;However, most of the players playing on Saturday will be teeing off in the middle of the day, but a few will start in the morning,&uot; Powell said.
The Labor Day Breakfast Scramble has taken place for the last 25 years, Powell said.
This will also be the second year for this tournament at Beau Pré, as it was held at Belwood from 1976 to 1998.
In 1999, the team of Bill Salter, Kenny Jackson, Scoop Murray and Jeff Hash won the tournament with a 59.
The tournament is a 4-man scramble.
Powell said that approximately 100 players will be in this tournament. The one thing Powell said he likes about the Labor Day Breakfast Scramble is that, as opposed to other tournaments, there are no favorites. &uot;That’s what makes it so much fun. People playing with different people. They have a lot of fun and they enjoy the golf course.&uot;
The Labor Day Breakfast Scramble starts at 9 a.m., with breakfast to be served at 8 a.m.
But why have two tournaments on a three-day holiday weekend, especially with the ongoing heat wave?
&uot;Because it is a three-day holiday weekend. People are off from work. It is a big weekend for golf,&uot; Powell said.
&uot;I think it’s great,&uot; Powell added. &uot;The members are very excited. A lot of players are going to be in both tournaments. Of course, some players will play in one or the other.&uot;
Powell said the hot weather that has gripped the Miss-Lou for much of the summer will not be a big factor in either tournaments, even though the temperature is expected to be around 100 degrees all three days.
&uot;Actually, it’s been fairly nice out here,&uot; he said. &uot;It’s a little hot, but we’re used to it by now. The golf course is nice and dry.
&uot;We’ll be running a beverage cart and we’ll have plenty of water and Gatorade. Hopefully the players will run into a little breeze while driving their carts to cool them down.&uot;
