The Scott County Mississippi Genealogical Society in Forest met recently and elected to publish a new book containing county-related and family histories.

The new volume will be titled &uot;SCOTT COUNTY MISSISSIPPI HISTORY AND FAMILIES.&uot;

The new hardbound book will contain a comprehensive history of the county since its formation; histories of all communities past and present; histories of churches, clubs and organizations; memorials and tributes; special historical highlights of Scott County and the histories of individual families who live or have lived in the area.

The Society will publish the book with Rose Publishing Company of Humboldt, Tenn., who specializes in county-related family history books and pictorial histories. Rose has or is currently publishing books on Desoto, Kemper, Monroe, Alcorn, Newton, Carroll, Pontotoc, Lee, Tippah, Jasper, Calhoun, Smith and Tishomingo counties.

Any family who now lives in Scott County, has ever lived there, or who has family ties to the county will be eligible to submit up to 500 words with on family photograph free of charge. Additional photos can be included for $15 each and additional words are subject to a nominal charge of 15 cents per word over the 500 word limit. The Society is asking people who submit family stories to submit them in a typed and double-spaced form if possible. The deadline for these submissions has been extended until Dec. 31.

According to Mary Schwab, president of the Scott County Genealogical Society, this work will be unique because it is a first-of-the-kind for Scott countians and will help preserve family histories that might otherwise be lost to future generations.

DOES ANYONE KNOW …

Anita Mercer (123 Harveytown Road, Tylertown, Miss., 39667, e-mail redneckhick69@hotmail.com) is looking for information about her grandfather, RUSSELL BOLIN FOSTER, who was born 12 April 1925 in Kentucky. Russell married Malzia MATTHEWS, on 9 October 1943. They had a son, Robert Blanco Foster, who was born on 10 September 1944. The couple divorced on 26 September 1946. Because of the Service Extension Act of 1941, it is known that Russell was assigned to Company &uot;L&uot; 272d Infantry on 27 October 1943. He was discharged on 17 March 1944. There is no other information on him. Does any reader know of Russell Bolin Foster or his family? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Frances Hoback (3144 Bluefield, Memphis, Tenn., 38128, 901-382-0517) is trying to locate information on her mother’s parents and grandparents.

Her mother, Viola Mae LOTT, was orphaned at age 9 and was moved many times. She knew very little about her parents. Viola was born 12 August 1906 in Isola or Leflore County, Miss., and died 16 August 1994 in Memphis, Tenn. She was the daughter of GUSTAVOUS ADOLPHUS LOTT and MARY ELENA CARTER. Gus was born on 17 June 1879 possibly in Leflore County. He had three siblings (Allen Pickney, Elizabeth and John Marion) but his parents are unknown. He married Mary Elena on 22 December 1904 in Isola, Miss. Mary Elena was born on 11 January 1889 to Rudolphus and Martha (?) Carter.

Both parents were born in 1850 possibly in Alabama. Mary had three siblings as well (Richard A., Webster and Clarence). Gus died on 23 January 1913 at age 35 in Isola. Mary followed on 30 January 1918 at age 29. They couple had lived at Middle Lake near Dawson Lake in Isola not far from an Indian Mound. Does anyone have information on the Carter and Lott families?
